ICE MEMORIES
ICE MEMORIES – The Book
ICE MEMORIES is a project in the context of climate change and global warming that bridges the gap between art and science. Photographs visualize the atmosphere of past millennia embedded in the global ice masses of our planet to create awareness of their importance.
Glaciers are a key element to us humans as they enable us to look back in time and help us to understand the complexities of the Earth’s system.
For the project, ice core samples were extracted from the Morteratsch Glacier in the eastern part of Switzerland. The samples were illuminated and photographed to reveal inclusions and trapped atmosphere from past millennia.
In collaboration, scientists from the Paul Scherrer Institute in Villigen, Switzerland determined the age of the ice core samples to place them within the overall sequence of time.
The result is a series of abstract photographs in different scales and perspectives, documenting and preserving what is condemned to perish.
The Book
In a large-format fine-art book, these abstract and unique photographs of ancient glacier ice reveal something new that we haven’t seen before.
The hardcover of the book is embossed with structures of glacier-crevasses, giving the feeling of holding a piece of ancient glacier ice while reading the book.
Landscape images in special black and silver pigment print highlight the vast beauty of our alpine environment and complement the abstract and aestheticized magenta-colored images of the ice core samples.
The renowned ice core researcher Prof. Dr. Margit Schwikowski sheds light on the scientific aspects, while curator Beatrice Fontana highlights the potential of the work between art and science.
