ICE MEMORIES

Ice Memories is a project in the context of climate change and
global warming that bridges the gap between art and science.

Photographs visualize the atmosphere of past millennia embedded in the global
ice masses of our planet to create awareness of their importance. These ice
masses are a time capsule for us humans as they enable us to look back in time.

For the project, ice core samples were extracted from the deeper layers of the
Morteratsch Glacier in the eastern part of Switzerland. The samples were illuminated and
photographed to reveal inclusions and trapped atmosphere from past millennia.
In collaboration, scientists from the Paul Scherrer Institute in Villigen, Switzerland determined
the age of the ice core samples to place them within the overall sequence of time.
The result is a series of abstract photographs in different scales and perspectives,
documenting and preserving what is condemned to perish.

The award-winning cinematographer Frederick Iliano documented the process and challenges over the course of the ICE MEMORIES project.

THE BOOK

In a large-format fine-art book, the unique photographs of
the ancient glacier ice reveal something new that we haven’t seen before.
The renowned ice core researcher Prof. Dr. Margit Schwikowski sheds light on the scientific aspects.
Curator Beatrice Fontana explains the potential of the work between art and science.

Join me on the journey 1,800 years back in time!

ICE CORE
A 1’800-year-old ice core, showing bubbles of trapped air which are still containing the atmosphere of that time.

CIRCULAR CANVAS
Sections of an ice core, 5 mm thick, backlight illuminated making different inclusions visible.

DEEPER PERSPECTIVE
Microscopic photographs of the ice cores, revealing another universe.

ICE MEMORY FOUNDATION

As the glaciers are inexorably disappearing, a community of ice core scientists from all over the world have joined forces to form the “Ice Memory Foundation”.
They want to prevent the loss of important information about our past and have made it their mission to store ice cores from twenty endangered
glaciers around the world in an archive in Antarctica and thus secure them for the future. The ice is to be preserved for the next generation or
generations after that of researchers so that they can gain information from it in the future that cannot yet be obtained using today's methods.
