ICE MEMORIES

Ice Memories is a project that visualizes the atmosphere of past millennia embedded in the global ice masses of our planet to create awareness of their importance.

For the project, ice core samples were extracted from the deeper layers of the Morteratsch Glacier in the eastern part of Switzerland. The samples were illuminated and photographed to reveal inclusions and trapped atmosphere from past millennia. In collaboration, scientists from the Paul Scherrer Institute in Villigen, Switzerland determined the age of the ice core samples to place them within the overall sequence of time.
The result is a series of abstract photographs in different scales and perspectives, documenting and preserving what is condemned to perish.
